The iPhone: Second Time's a Charm

The original iPhone was a high-tech indulgence. From its gorgeous touchscreen to its classy Web browser, it set a new bar for the look and feel of mobile phones. Naysayers nitpicked about its technical shortcomings — and its top-shelf price — but its breakthrough design won it millions of fans nonetheless.

The new iPhone 3G should please everyone. Its look and feel are only slightly improved, but a faster network loads Web pages more quickly, true GPS functionality allows it to easily find places nearby, and the new $199 price (down from $400) makes it an affordable luxury.
Before deciding whether to buy, however, make sure you can actually take advantage of the iPhone 3G's high-speed data network. 3G stands for third-generation, which in non-geek speak translates to Web pages and mail messages that, ideally, load about three times faster than on the original iPhone. Even better, 3G coverage enables you to make a phone call and surf the Web at the same time. That's great, if you live or work in a place where the 3G network of AT&T (the sole wireless carrier of the iPhone) is active. (To find out, check AT&T's virtual map.) That's not so great in cities like New York where AT&T's cellular coverage is awful. As one of my colleagues in New York City, who bought the original iPhone, commented, "It's just a toy. You can't make phone calls on it, so I carry my Verizon phone with me all the time."

The real fun begins when you tap on the icon called "App Store" and start browsing the hundreds of add-on applications that have been developed just for the iPhone. You'll find tons of games (I like JirboBreak, a free game inspired by the Atari classic Breakout) and mobile versions of popular websites like Pandora, Facebook, MySpace and the New York Times. Most apps will cost you, but the vast majority are $9.99 or less. The apps work on the old iPhones too, but you'll enjoy them a lot more on the iPhone 3G because many of the programs, including Yelp (local business reviews), Whrrl (mobile social networking) and UrbanSpoon (restaurant reviews), use your exact location — provided by the iPhone 3G's GPS chip — to make recommendations. The apps also load much faster over the 3G network.

I was disappointed to learn, however, that 3G, while an improvement over AT&T's creaky Edge network, is still not fast enough to allow wireless downloads of either iTunes music or some of the larger applications. Instead, I had to either log onto a wi-fi network or physically plug my phone into my PC. And it still feels pokey compared to my cable broadband connection at home. At times, downloads took so long that I gave up on checking for new messages and waiting for mobile websites to load. Even the prettiest browser can't make up for that.

The virtual keyboard, perhaps the iPhone's most unloved feature, remains unchanged. I like it, but some people find it so torturous to type with that they refrain from sending e-mails or typing Web addresses altogether. Fortunately, the new apps in many ways serve as shortcuts to popular websites, reducing the need to do much typing. So, instead of launching the built-in Safari browser and typing a URL, you can just tap on, say, the free WeatherBug app to check the forecast or the iScopes button to get your daily horoscope.

Here's my top gripe: the iPhone 3G does not let you record video or watch live TV, features that are standard (and free) on less expensive rivals like the Samsung Instinct and Verizon Voyager. There is no excuse for leaving out these functions. Otherwise, I can live with the unremovable battery and accept the skimpy battery life (about 5 hours with heavy usage in my tests) as the price for the iPhone's big, bright screen. Since I don't have a huge media collection, the unexpandable memory (8 GB comes standard; for 16 GB, you'll pay an extra $100) doesn't faze me either. If you've got lots of songs, photos or other files, however, this is a real drawback.
Still, it's hard not to have a soft spot for the iPhone. The problematic launch of the iPhone 3G on July 11 was unfortunate. But once you've tapped around the browser for even a few minutes or played with the slider that lets you fast-forward or rewind voice messages in the phone's visual voicemail, it's easy to see why millions of people are sold. The iPhone has the most elegant user interface of any phone I've seen, and its add-on apps make it more than just a toy you'll soon outgrow. What's more, the iPhone's GPS chip and 3G network bring it closer in line with other smartphones' data capabilities.

So, if you can live with the $70-per-month fee for all-inclusive data and voice calling — and can get decent coverage with AT&T where you live — it's certainly worth considering. If you're on a budget (and who isn't?), though, you'll find more useful features on less pricey rivals.
Personally, I'm holding out for the new handsets that will run on Google's Android operating system due out later this year. Android phones will be carrier agnostic, so I won't be shackled to the AT&T network, and the phone's add-on apps are likely to be less expensive (and possibly even free). That's the promise, anyway. I'll know for sure once I get my hands on one.

(kpl/ari)

Ferdinand Porsche
born: 03-09-1875
birth place: Czechoslovakia
died: 27-03-1951

The young Porsche chose to be a mechanical apprentice instead of attending university.

In 1898, he was employed by Lohner, a manufacturer of electric cars and, at the age of 23, he designed the Lohner-Porsche. This car was exhibited at the most prestigious car exhibition of the time, L'Exposition Universelle De Paris in 1900.

Porsche won the opportunity to design another prototype, a four wheel drive with an electrical motor in each wheel.

In 1902, with Ferdinand Porsche as the pilot, it won its class at the hill climb in Exelber, Austria.

During the next 25 years, he worked for many different companies. One of his most important achievements was the design of a road train used in WWI.

Porsche joined Daimler Germany in 1923. In 1926, Daimler merged with Benz, providing the opportunity for Porsche to work on the Mercedes S and SSK projects.

As well as race cars, he designed a diesel powered truck and a popular automobile. He opened his own engineering office in Stuttgart in 1930.

In 1934, the order from Hitler to design and build the first "peoples car" was received. Porsche designed the Volkswagen Beetle, as well as many military vehicles used by the Nazis during WWII.

After the war, Porsche spent twenty months in a French prison, and his son took control of the business.

Dr. Porsche (he received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Stuttgart) was certainly the most prolific automotive designer of first half of the 20th century.

Dr. Porsche died in 1951 at the age of 75. The Porsche name has gone on to greater fame and success, thanks to his son's, and grandchildren's, involvement with the engineering company Ferdinand Porsche created.

Memuaskan Diri Sendiri

Torino Food Tour

Food capital

Enjoying good food and drink is undoubtedly an important part of Turin (Torino) culture. With the informal atmosphere of the trattorias, the charm of the top restaurants and the exoticism of the ethnic eateries, your eyes, nose and taste buds are in for a incredible experience. Turin (Torino) is, in fact, one of the undisputed world capitals of taste: the city has always boasted a tradition of good food and wine and is famous for the unique ingredients that are used in its local dishes and the skill and creativity of its chefs, confectioners and chocolate makers. Several establishments have developed here over the years that pay close attention to quality and continuous improvement, in order to making eating and drinking a truly pleasurable experience. Thanks to initiatives such as Gourmet in & around Torino and ChocoPass you can sample many different dishes and delicacies at affordable prices. Go on, give in to temptation!

Getting to know Turin (Torino) also means trying out some of its numerous restaurants, where you will be able to sample regional dishes and explore innovative recipes by chefs who have made creativity the key to their success. Starters such as anchovies in green sauce and electric tomini, tasty first courses including agnolotti and tajarin pasta (which can be sprinkled with the fragrant and much sought-after white truffles in the autumn), second courses such as boiled meat, pot roast and mixed fried fish and the extremely original bagna caoda sauce, are the preamble to a selection of cheeses and desserts that no gourmet will be able to resist.

Good food should be accompanied by fine wine, and there is no shortage of the latter in Piemonte, with 9 DOCG wines and more than 40 DOC wines. There are whites (Gavi, Arneis, Favorita, Moscato), superb reds (Dolcetto, Grignolino, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Barbaresco and Barolo), and also sparkling wines, which, through Martini & Rossi, gave rise to the tradition of Asti Spumante.
And don’t forget the Canavese district ad the Valleys of Lanzo, walking among the Wine Trails, with their well-known wines, appreciated in Italy and abroad, and the rich traditional flavours of the typical cuisine of the Olympic Mountains.
In some restaurants and wine bars it is possible to take your unfinished bottle home with you. Many establishments participate in the Buta Stupa project (a Piedmontese expression meaning ‘uncorked bottle’) and will seal the bottle and put it in a paper bag so that you can finish it later, prolonging the pleasant memory of your stay in Turin (Torino).
To find out more about the history of oenology you can visit the Martini Museum at the gates of the city. It is housed in the cellars of the 18th century villa that was home to the first Martini & Rossi factory.

If a good morning depends on a good breakfast, you will never have a bad day in Turin (Torino). An excellent espresso, cappuccino or Moroccan coffee, accompanied by fresh brioches, in one of the many bars and cafes in the city centre is certainly a moment to savour, and it soon becomes a habit. The famous Lavazza brand of coffee originates from Turin (Torino). It was produced in the old city centre, in a grocery shop that is now a modern café and restaurant, where you can sample the coffee in many different forms. Turin (Torino) is the city of historical cafes, where men of culture, politicians and noble ladies would meet in the 1800s. Today, they are still a part of Turinese custom and culture, a must for visitors who wish to taste the specialities of subalpine confectionery in an atmosphere of bygone days.

The fine cuisine and outstanding wines of Turin (Torino) and Piedmont can also be enjoyed at home. The Chamber of Commerce of Turin (Torino) and Slow Food have created the Maestri del Gusto (Masters of Taste), a collection of valuable addresses that have been selected according to the specific characteristics of regional produce: you will find shops that sell Piedmontese specialities, pasta and cheese, butcher’s shops and gastronomic emporiums. There is also a mention for the new food and wine superstore, Eataly.

Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte

Nokia Launches 8800 Carbon Arte for the Rich

To be sold for about $1,600

Nokia announced today the upcoming availability of a new luxury handset from its Arte series, namely the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte.

Succeeding to the 8800 Arte and the 8800 Sapphire Arte models, the new Nokia comes with a similar slide-up form factor. Built from carbon fiber, titanium, stainless steel and polished glass, the Carbon Arte should be among the most resistant Nokia handsets ever made. Featuring 3D patterns, the luxury phone, is (as Nokia says) reflecting "a modern feel through the unique tones, textures and sculpted shapes that carbon fiber and titanium deliver".

The 8800 Carbon Arte brings a unique tap-for-time feature. This allows users to simply tap twice under the phone's display, on the steel surface, when they want a clock to be seen on screen.
A range of wallpapers and soundtracks are pre-loaded on the new Arte. Furthermore, its background images can "organically change", offering different ones during the day.

Nokia has not unveiled yet the full list of specs that the 8800 Carbon Arte comes with. However, the Finnish manufacturer did mention that the handset includes the following: GSM and 3G connectivity, 4GB of internal memory, a "stunning OLED display", advanced audio quality, a turn-to-mute feature, a 3.2 Megapixel auto focus camera and an all-in-one microUSB connector. Also, the new Arte is dressed in "Nokia's anti-fingerprint coating", which should keep fingerprints away from its fancy case.

Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte comes with a set of exclusive accessories, including: a leather pouch, an elegant desk stand and a "Bluetooth touch-sensitive volume control headset".

As expected, the new 8800 Carbon Arte will have a high retail price: 1,100 Euros (about 1,615 USD or 870 GBP) without taxes and subsidies. Nokia says that the fashionable and expensive handset is scheduled to hit the market by the end of September.

LG Prada II Getting Closer, QWERTY Keyboard and 5MP Camera On Board

LG Prada II, successor of the Prada phone released by the South Korean company last year and sold in about 1 million units so far, will bring lots of new and improved features. Although, at the moment, we have nothing official regarding the Prada II, an almost complete list with its specs has appeared on the Web, via Boy Genius Report.

The new Prada will keep the 3 inch TFT display of the old one, as well as the 240 x 400 pixel resolution and the Flash UI. The novelties are represented by: HSDPA connectivity, motion sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and a full QWERTY keyboard – quite an unusual feature, considering that we're talking about a phone made for fashion-loving mobile users and not for businesspersons.

LG Prada II will also come equipped with a 5 Megapixel camera with auto focus, flash and video recording (in VGA mode) – a great improvement from the 2 MP camera of the first Prada, which doesn't even have auto focus. Sure, this camera is no match for the 8 Megapixel one packed into the upcoming KC910, but if it’s on par with the Viewty one when it comes to photo quality, then the Prada II will surely enter the select world of high-end camera phones.

The future Prada is said to measure 104.5 x 54 x 16.8 millimeters and rely on a 950 mAh battery of unknown performances.

No word yet on when LG will fully and officially present the fashionable phone. Moreover, a price for the handset has not been given, but since the first Prada was quite expensive, we should expect the new one to retail for about 1,000 USD (700 Euros).

While waiting the announcement of Prada II, I can't help asking myself when Samsung will decide to come up with an Armani II. Because it has to, otherwise its South Korean neighbor will be left alone in the fashion-brand-named area of the mobile industry.

Enjoy,

LF-A Roadster

F isn’t just a letter, it’s a statement. And the LF-A Roadster is our boldest statement yet. Based on the LF-A coupe, we’ve removed the top to create a high-performance roadster. Its low-profile, sleek, aerodynamic shape is fashioned from lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum and features a speed adaptive rear wing. And like the coupe, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine capable of over 500 horsepower [1], which can reach an astonishing top speed of over 200 mph [1] [2] on the track. Fasten your sunscreen.

Mazda Kiyora

Too orangey for crows

The Paris motor show isn't far away... which must mean that a swoopy Mazda concept is on the way.

Ah yes, here it is. This is the Kiyora concept, a glassy little number described as 'a lightweight, next generation, urban compact concept car'. Erm...

Kiyora means 'concentrated fruit soft drink' in Japanese (sadly that's a lie - it actually means 'clean and pure', which is far less amusing) and, we're told, represents the harmony between driving pleasure and environmental and safety features. We don't really know what this means.

What we do know is that the Kiyora is powered by a surprisingly sensible-sounding four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine and gets Mazda's stop-start system, which means good fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.

At least, it would if it actually existed in the real world. Which it doesn't.

Nonetheless, it's another impressively wild looking concept from Mazda. But with chief designer Franz von Holzhausen defecting to Tesla last month, will this be the last of Mazda's super-swoopy concepts?

We hope not...

It's even got its own theme tune.
